Yes a great actor, though not his line I still laugh at "Don't tell him Pike".
Another (real) Home Guard NCO was Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell). He believed passionately in the armed civilian militia. To paraphrase his arguement, he believed the rifle on the wall of the worker's flat or over the mantlepiece of the farm labourer's cottage was the best defence against tyranny.
