We do have two other memorials the main one on Chapel hill will be 100 years old in 2022 and the one on Victoria /Wood street was unveiled in 1917 erected to as a tribute to the people from Newton wood who joined up sadly some of the men who did join lost their lives .
Globe Sq memorial paid for by public subscriptions was 100 years old in March this year unveiled by Captain George Heathcote and dedicated by The Rev W Palin from St Marks church 27 men on the memorials died and another 132 names are record of men who served in that war , Cllr George Saxon was the treasurer of the fund raising group , today our local Globe cafe sponsor the memorial and surroundings paying for the planters and hanging baskets on the Square.
The Tame valley memorial was again paid for by public subscriptions this one cost £500 a huge amount of money then, built in a French style the angel is looking towards the battle fields of France and Flanders .
Unveiled by Capt Heathcote and dedicated by The Rev B Adams fro St Johns Church ,The names of everyone from the area who were in the forces are on the memorial including 34 men who lost their lives in the war.
This is a special memorials to me one I have tried to look after over many years 10 years ago I persuaded the authorities to pay to have it moved from its original position at the top of the steps that lead from Park road into our cemetery and to have it restored .
It can now be seen by many people who visit the cemetery access is much better moved only a short distance but no longer isolated , each years local scout cubs and beavers attend with many parents to lay the poppies at the memorial.
It will be September 2020 when the memorial is 100 years old hopefully the virus lock-down will have eased allowing us to celebrate its centenary we will organise an event and include the Globe Sq memorial
