Prior to the Dukinfield Baths opening pupils of Crescent Road used Stalybridge Baths. We were bussed there by SHMD double deckers for our weekly dip. Because of the location of Dukinfield Baths (just under the 2 mile limit) we were no longer eligible for free transport. Norman Lee, Crescent Roads Maths teacher, had a gang of us measure the actual distance from the school to the new baths using a surveyors chain. Unfortunately our measurement confirmed the distance... so it was Shank's Pony after all.
It was a revelation to be using a modern state of the art baths where previously we endured the dingy offering of Stalybridge with its underground dungeon like changing facility.
