Very austere times yet people put in the time and effort and of course expense when there was already little enough money to make ends meet. Every other street would have had a church, chapel, mission, Sunday school etc. all made their contribution and efforts with this seasonal pageant and many other such events.

I like the way people took more time to pose for a photo in those days. They look very proud.
It looks quite flashy for a Methodist Sunday School but I suppose May is the month to celebrate beauty.
